Genre:
Electronica / House / Dub
Region:
Byron Bay, NSW, Australia
Dave Basek initiated his career spinning discs in Sydney early in '93 at the Fuk That Sh*t parties with Mako and Kenny Twist, playing breakbeat and drum + bass. However it was the gift of a drum machine the following year that changed the direction and energy of his music, creating a keen interest in making his own sounds.
With the decision to pursue his passion more seriously he moved to the North Coast to study contemporary music at Southern Cross University in Lismore. Whilst studying, Dave continued to DJ and promote his own nights in and around the area, including the Danse Macabre party and the seminal weekly club Electrick, a night dedicated to live and original electronic music. Following the success of these live performances and chasing the desire to get behind the decks once more, he opened 'Blue Plate Special.
It was here that Basek, along with DJs Uncle Bulli and Nick Taylor, pushed forward with house and breaks sounds for the Byron Bay area, enjoying weekly capacity crowds. Since this time Basek has performed and held residencies at a plethora of clubs and parties around Australia.
As a producer, Basek has been steadily gaining a reputation for quality
releases world wide. His first vinyl release, the Ultra EP, was played
extensively by Australian DJs and quickly sold out of its initial
pressing, establishing the direction for his future productions. In
September 2002 Basek co-produced with the H-Foundation (USA) to complete
their debut album 'Environments' for Soma and to date Basek has now
released music on a variety of labels including Chocoflash, Kindred
Sounds, EQ and Hussle. He's worked with and remixed a wide variety of
producers including Fred Everything, Dano, Alex Kid, Halo, Hipp-e, Kriece,
Phil Smart, Ed Function, and Jimi Polar while his productions have been
remixed by people like Trentmoller, Joey Youngman and Dave Robinson.
Apart from time spent DJing and composing in the studio, Basek pursues his
passion for live performance with the 20for7 jazz-house collective working
closely with some of the east coast's finest young musicians including
Shan Sol R, Simon Baker and Caroline Sommers. With 20for7 the band held a
seminal residency at My Bar on the Gold Coast for four solid years and
with Overdub and 20for7 Basek has performed at a wide variety of festivals
playing an inspiring variety of styles from techno to true form jazz with
house.
