Junkbeats update February 2008 Posted on
The Junkbeats collective has been busy over the past few months since our first release. The Junkbeats Sampler Volume 1 was a resounding success. The EP features tracks from label stalwarts Dave Basek, Phil Smart, Ed Function and Jimi Polar, a good representation of the depth of music our collective is producing.
Our second release "Smoke Yourself" from Dave Basek and Phil Smart featured a remix by Consistent from the TFE records stable, home of Jan Driver. The mix made an impact on people like Jesse Rose and slotted nicely into David Duriez’s Brique Rouge Records monthly mix.
The latest release on the Junkbeats label is Phil Smart and Jon Williams' "Downsize", released via Beatport on February 12. A natural journey conceived high on a fog shrouded hill in San Francisco, Downsize also features a trippier, drifting remix from Future Classic's Jimi Polar.
The long awaited new look website is now up and running, with a lot of Dave Basek’s blood, sweat and tears having been poured into the site. Check out the results at www.junkbeats.com. There you will find free music downloads and podcasts, information on artists, interesting links, gig calendar, links to purchase exclusive Junkbeats music direct from us via our www.ithinkmusic.com site as well as www.beatport.com and the chance stay informed about Junkbeats news, releases and the new Freelectronica netlabel.
We have also launched a bunch of sub-labels like dB Recordings (the first release received heavy rotation on TripleJ, Australia's leading youth network radio station), East Point Recordings, 6am and Lobe Limbique Musique, which are dedicated to various electronic, ambient and explorative genres of Australian music. Also coming soon is our protech label Servo with upcoming releases from Agent Of Kin, Sam Hayes, Rob Salmon and Scott Hopkins.
News on the junkbeats crew... Posted on
Dave Basek has taken on a music teaching position at the Northern Rivers Conservatorium, NSW and continues to build computers, grow chilli plants and crank out the beats, with plenty of new releases and remixes for Junkbeats and sublabels. Dave has remixes for Deepchild and Jeff Bennett out soon and more collaborations with Kriece http://www.kriece.com to come, after the success of the Snap Freeze release that was huge for Kriece’s Kindred Sounds label.
Phil Smart is back from his latest US trip and has relocated to Newcastle, just north of Sydney, playing a Sunday residency there and travelling to Sydney for gigs twice a month at places like Habitat, Future Classic, Minimal Fuss, Lost Baggage, Loose Kaboose, Deep As Funk and Subservice www.myspace.com/philsmart
George Sadlik has been getting around town with Traktor in tow. He's seen a busy year with gigs in Brisbane, and Bellingen and keeping the Sydneysiders in the know by feeding tunes from the Junkbeats labels to Sydney punters and working hard to get the Habitat label night cranking.
Mark Briais brought the Junkbeats clan to his local hood of Brisbane where they made quite an impact on the Brisbane clubbing elite. Quality highlights included gigs supporting Funk Da Void and Alex Smoke and regular spots at Family, Elsewhere, Sundae boat cruise and Bar Soma. Late nights in front of Cubase have paid off for Mark and his "Testing Times" release will be out soon on East Point Recordings.
Ed Function is wiggling his butt in the Fo_sek guise with Dave Basek and will have a new EP and album out on Junkbeats in 2008, plus the release of his ambient/chill EP for Junkbeats sublabel 6am.
Jimi Polar has been creaming it with releases on Future Classic, being charted by John Digweed and the big boys. Collaborations with Jamie Lloyd and living the life of the full time musician in Sydney and lapping it up!
Brisbane's seminal upfront music night Drop, hosted by DJ Scott Walker, was a chance for the collective to play and party together. Jimi Polar warmed up on the nu-disco/dubhouse tip then flipping over to play Moog and samples over the live set by Dave Basek and George Sadlik. We're talking three suit cases of mixing desk, samplers, keys, laptops, controllers, not your pseudo-Abelton set that seems to be the norm. Banging out the new and old releases it got a great reaction from the Brisbane crowd. Phil Smart, fresh from his Minimal Fuss set with Dixon and Ewan Pearson, played seamlessly. Just damn good.
Habitat club night launches Friday 8th February Posted on
Junkbeats launches our very own monthly club night Habitat at the Bunker in Sydney on February 8. Line up features DJ sets from Phil Smart, Jimi Polar and George Sadlik as well as a not-to-be-missed live set from Junbeats captain Dave Basek. Music made to last.
